FIVE WAYS WE HELP YOU GROW.
From a single raised bed to a complete edible property transformation โ every DEW GARDENS service starts with understanding your site, your goals, and your real available time.
KITCHEN
GARDEN DESIGN.
Full-service kitchen garden design for San Diego properties. We design around your space's actual sunlight, drainage, and soil conditions โ not a generic raised bed template. The design includes a planting calendar specific to San Diego's coastal Southern California climate, a first-year crop list, and soil preparation specifications.
Every design includes an irrigation plan. Drip irrigation is not an optional upgrade in San Diego โ it's what separates gardens that produce abundantly from gardens that fail to fungal disease every summer. We specify, source, and install irrigation as part of every kitchen garden project.
EDIBLE
LANDSCAPING.
Landscapes where every plant serves both ornamental and productive purposes. Fruit trees where ornamental flowering trees would go. Berry shrubs in place of decorative shrubs. Perennial herbs as border planting. Edible ground covers instead of turf or conventional ground covers.
The design challenge is making productive landscapes look intentionally designed rather than utilitarian. We've been solving this problem in San Diego since 2018 โ a fig espalier on a fence looks more architecturally considered than a forsythia hedge. A persimmon tree in fall has better ornamental value than most flowering ornamentals.
FOOD
FOREST DESIGN.
A food forest is a multi-layer perennial planting that mimics woodland structure while producing food at every layer. Unlike annual kitchen gardens that require replanting each season, food forests become more productive and require less maintenance each year as they establish and mature.
San Diego's climate is extremely well-suited to food forest design. California's native fruit trees (pawpaw, persimmon, serviceberry), its productive nut trees (chestnut, hazel, pecan), and its edible understory plants (ramps, spicebush, elderberry) form the foundation of a food forest that is both regionally appropriate and genuinely productive within 3โ5 years of planting.
Dwarf and semi-dwarf fruit trees: persimmon, pawpaw, apple, pear, peach, fig
Blueberry, elderberry, currant, gooseberry, aronia, autumn olive
Perennial herbs, ramps, asparagus, sunchoke, sorrel, lovage
Strawberry, wood strawberry, creeping thyme, clover nitrogen fixers
RAISED BED
INSTALLATION.
Custom raised bed construction for San Diego properties. We build in cedar (naturally rot-resistant, no chemical treatment), black locust (California native, extraordinarily durable), or galvanized steel. All beds are 18โ24 inches deep โ the depth that actually supports productive roots, not the 12-inch standard that forces roots into San Diego's clay subsoil by midsummer.
SEASONAL
GARDEN CARE.
Ongoing garden management calibrated to San Diego's actual planting calendar โ not a national schedule that treats California like New England. Every care visit produces a written summary of what was done, what was observed (plant health, pest pressure, soil moisture), and what to watch in the coming weeks.
We offer three care program tiers. Harvest (monthly visits, full management), Tend (bi-monthly, maintenance and guidance), and Check-In (quarterly, assessment and recommendation only). Every program includes a seasonal kickoff visit in spring and a garden close-down visit in November.
